A cautionary tale for Aircrew captured by the enemy during the World War 2.  The warning was that even letting drop small pieces of information to an  interrogator or even to a stooge prisoner could give Germans unnecessary intelligence. Presumably this would have been part of the briefing  before their first operations over enemy territory.

Wear and tear on the film means that the initial recording has picked up some of the distortions  of the soundtrack. A fascinating insight into the background of aircrew training.. This would have been some small comfort for  an airman in the  unfamiliar  and disconcerting situation. Appears  to be only part of a longer film. A fascinating insight into preparation of potential Prisoners of War.    Black and White of course with problems with the sound. .10 mins only.

Film 3

While the factory shown  is not specifically identified but it could only be  Raleigh at Nottingham. It is  implied the factory  has 100 years experience but this may relate to illustrating previous models

A father and son are shown round . Materials testing, converting strip into tubes, pressing the bottom bracket, assembly of the frame then brazing, tempering, pickling,  and cleaning up . Making of front forks,  hand polishing, , rust proofing, enamelling, , lining out the enamelled frame, handlebar bending and then plating,  and polishing, . Mudguard making,   pedal  forging and finishing, pressing gearwheel  and cutting out teeth,  building hubs and three speeds  and of course the wheels and tyres before assembly commences . Clues in the narrative suggest this film was made in the late 1940s.. As a Raleigh owner myself I was amazed at the size of the factory.  This film ought to part of the family history of anybody with Raleigh connections. Over the years  there must have been thousands working there. It is fascinating to the speed of workers on fiddly jobs..  Made long before the import of cycles. Black and While 19 minutes with sound.

For many years Nottingham was closely associated with bicycles thanks to the reputation of Raleighs around the world..  0355

Film 4

A Magazine type programme filler on post war progress. Developments in the design of Ships lifeboats, including practice launching,  24 ‘ carrying 32 passengers with red sails . While you never think about their construction and layout.  Some lifeboats  have later been converted to cabin cruisers.

Ralph Wightman describes the McConnell  Bomford corn stripper mounted on a Fordson N tractor.  Comparison .Offered as a replacement for the tradityional binder harvesting

Youth Hostels reopen to visitors in post war  with plenty of hearty hikers to meet up. . Amusing insight for ex YHA members..  Very evocative of the early post war years.  10 mins Black and White . 0359

Film 5

Made as a geography film  it is centred  on the  Buffalo Lighthouse  on the Great Lakes specifically Lake Erie.  Power is supplied by the Niagara Falls hydro scheme. Views of the rail depot where 12 railroads meet. Industries include  Railroading,  Flour milling,  Iron and steel making.,  this is treated later in considerable detail  including rolling mills. Ore is linked by shipping to  iron ore mining 1000 miles away, with  some spectacular loading techniques at Duluth.

When the lakes are not frozen they are busy with shipping . The film makes clear just how important this is for America’s transport needs. Explanation and film of the massive locks between two lakes.

Coke production  is a function of making gas for the steel works.

Date is not certain but seems likely to be 50  or more years ago.  An interesting film for anybody with Lakes connections will enjoy this reminder of the situation as it was then.

Black and White   20 minutes.

Film  6

Very patronising film with overpowering  musical background recorded over 20 years ago. Made by Cadburys  to describe where cocoa comes from.   Thought to be very early sound film  so could be around  the late40s. 0832
